Maroon Fin is a blog for everything on the minds of Katrina San Nicolas and Evan Scarborough. We enjoy cooking meals with lots of vegetables in our apartment with our schnauzer puppy Charlie. She likes when we cook too because she gets the parts we drop.
What's the Name All About?
The name Maroon Fin is a reference to our late betta fish, Lara Jean. She was a beautiful and sweet fishy who loved swimming in her excessively large tank, eating shrimp, and resting under her favorite plant. She was more purple than maroon, but that's ok.
What's So Great About Maroon Fin?
This website also serves as a sort of live user interface experiment. Recipe websites are nutoriously UN-user-friendly. They make you scroll through pages and pages of text just to get to the actual recipe (and there are often multiple things that look like the recipe before you get to the real thing). Then once you get there, it's too easy to lose your place when you're trying to quickly skim the screen to figure out what to do while you're running around in the kitchen.
Maroon Fin tries to fix these problems in a few key ways:
- Don't have a super long recipe description
- Include icons of the ingredients to make it easier to skim
- Put the ingredient amounts in the instructions so you don't have to keep scrolling up
- Include extra widgets like timers directly into the instructions
